US winter wheat conditions were a point below expectations. Unchanged spring wheat plantings is supportive for MN type wheat, in our opinion. Corn plantings were 2 points below expectations and soybeans planted of 2 percent came in at expectations. Look for possible unchanged to higher corn, steady soybeans, and higher KC and MN type wheat, which could spill over into spring wheat.
- USDA reported 5 percent of the US corn crop had been planted, up only 2 points from the previous week, 2 points below trade expectations and compares to 15 percent a year ago and 14 percent for the 5-year average.
- USDA reported 2 percent of the US soybean crop had been planted, at trade expectations and compares to 5 percent a year ago and 2 percent for the 5-year average.
- USDA reported 3 percent of the US spring crop had been planted, unchanged from the previous week, 4 points below trade expectations and compares to 21 percent a year ago and 25 percent for the 5-year average.
- US winter wheat conditions were unchanged from the previous week at 31 percent for the combined good/excellent categories, and compare to 54 percent a year ago and 45 percent average.
- The very good category was up 1 and good down 1.
- The combined poor and very poor of 37 was also unchanged from the previous week.
- By class on our weighted index, HRW wheat conditions were down 0.5%, SRW up 0.6%, and Winter White up 0.1%. The All-wheat ratings slipped 0.1%.
- 13 percent of the winter wheat crop is headed, below 30 percent a year ago and 19 percent average.
- Any improvement in US wheat conditions from the recent should be reflected in next week’s crop progress.
